Herpes which is caused by Herpes simplex virus (HSV) affects quite a number of people, has no cure and has a tendency of re-occurring in a person. Herpes comes in two types, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Patients diagnosed with HSV-1 tend to have less severe symptoms and fewer recurrences as compared to those diagnosed with HSV-2.

- You can get infected by having unprotected sex either through the vagina or anus
- When you have oral sex with a person with the tendency of getting cold sores
- When you share sex toys
- When your genital areas come into contact with a person infected with the disease.
- During the birth of a child, an infected mother can pass on the infection to the unborn child. This is normally the case when the mother has genital sores present at the time of giving birth.
